J.J. Fad Supersonic for Throwback Thursday

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip hop, there are so many acts that don’t get their respect. Most of the least respected ones are the pioneers. Unfortunately, the newer generation don’t show love nor care to learn about them. First off, rest in peace to 2Pac seeing yesterday was the 27th anniversary of his passing away. For the rest of the year my Throwback Thursdays will be dedicated to many of the artists who don’t get their respect. This week, we will focus on J.J. Fad. J.J. Fad started out as a group of five, which is the name of the group. The name was an acronym of the original group members’ given names. The group went to three members and the name stood for Just Jammin’, Fresh and Def. They were discovered by the late, great Eazy-E and signed to his Ruthless Records.

The big hit they put out was called Supersonic and it’s still one of the biggest hip hop records ever. Before signing to Ruthless Records, J.J. Fad sold over 400,00 copies of the song independently. N.W.A members Dr. Dre, DJ Yella and the Arabian Prince handled production on their debut album. Supersonic was the name of the album and it went gold. The single Supersonic also went gold and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Performance. They became the first all-female group nominated for a Grammy award. Supersonic is my Throwback Thursday track of the week. Eminem showed his respect by kind of rapping their last verse on his Rap God track.

In June 2022, the city of Rialto held a ceremony to honor JJ Fad by naming a street after the group. Lead by local councilman Joe Baca, Jr, parts of Lurelane off Cactus, was named JJ Fad Way. Below you can peep at the track listing and stream link for the Supersonic album.
