The NBA season has begun and we’re already a week into the season. Last year, the Golden State Warriors defeated the Boston Celtics to win the championship. Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson won their 4th championship together. In the Eastern Conference, can the Boston Celtics find their way back to the NBA Finals? Milwaukee won the title two years ago, will Giannis lead the Bucks to another NBA Finals appearance? Can someone like the 76ers, Nets or Heat make a surprise run? With my top 8 teams in the league, only three of them came from the East. Who are the top 5 teams in the Eastern Conference? Below are my top 5 teams Eastern Conference entering the season.
Boston has started the season 3-1. Miami and Philadelphia are two of the teams they have beaten. Jayson Tatum is averaging almost 33 points in those four games. Jaylen Brown is averaging almost 22 a game, but either one can go off in any given game. Brown is one of the better perimeter defenders in the game. They are doing this despite missing starter center Robert Williams III. Williams is slotted to miss up to three months after having knee surgery. Boston traded for Malcolm Brogdon to bring in more defensive help in the backcourt. Despite their loss to Chicago, the Celtics is still my top team in the Eastern Conference.
The Bucks are 2-0 to start the season. The biggest issue with Milwaukee is staying healthy. Many believe they should have made it back to the NBA Finals for the second year in a row. The Injury to Khris Middleton derailed their chances and he’s still out from his knee injury. When Middleton returns, this will open the Bucks offense up for Giannis. The Greek Freak will be an MVP candidate and will be one of the better defenders. They resigned Bobby Portis, which is great because he brings energy. If healthy, Serge Ibaka will fit in nicely on this team. Joe Ingles brings another threat from the outside.
The Miami Heat seems like they’re on the cusp on making it to the NBA Finals again. They made in the bubble, but the two teams above them have made it the last two years. Miami lost some of its toughness by losing P.J. Tucker via free agency. The loss of Tucker will hurt them on the defensive side of the ball. They did re-sign Victor Oladipo. If Oladipo can give them the scoring he did off the bench this is a plus for this Heat team. Miami have started the season with a 1-3 record, but they should turn things around.
Speaking of teams off to a rough start, the 76ers began the year losing their first three games. They beat Indiana 120-106 to pick up their first win of the season. Joel Embiid was an MVP candidate last season and should be one this year. They did make a move and acquired De’Anthony Milton from Memphis. During free agency, they signed P.J. Tucker to a 3-year deal. James Harden also agreed to terms on an extension to keep him in Philly. Tyrese Maxey is a star in waiting and if they get in involved more the sky is the limit.
The final team is the Brooklyn Nets. Kevin Durant requested a trade during the offseason, but later rescinded it because Brooklyn wanted too much. It was rumored that Kyrie Irving was going to get traded, but he signed a deal to keep him with Brooklyn. Ben Simmons is someone we don’t know what you’ll get from him. If they put it together, this team could surprise people and make a NBA Finals run. Joe Harris need to be healthy to provide more shooting. They signed T.J. Warren to a 1-year deal. This is likely their last year together, so if Brooklyn doesn’t make any progress changes are in store.
The last one was a toss-up of about 4 or 5 other teams. Cleveland, Chicago, Toronto and Atlanta all have potential to snatch that 5th spot. What do you think about my top 5 Eastern Conference teams?
